Adrien had never seen Elena cry like that.
Not loud.
Not dramatically.
That would have been easier.
She sat in the back of the SUV staring at the photograph of Sophie, tears running silently down her face as though her body had forgotten how to breathe.
Adrien sat beside her.
"We're bringing her home."
Elena looked at him.
"You can't promise that."
"I don't make promises I don't intend to keep."
"Intentions won't save her."
"No."
He held her gaze.
"But I will."
Luca drove toward the city.
Marcus sat in front.
No one trusted him anymore.
Not fully.
Maybe not at all.
But they needed what he knew.
Adrien spoke.
"Tell me about Gabriel."
Marcus stared through the windshield.
"He was older than me."
"How much older?"
"Seven years."
"What happened?"
"Our father worked for your father."
Adrien remembered.
Samuel Vale.
Old-school.
Brutal.
Loyal.
At least according to history.
"Gabriel hated the Morettis."
"Why?"
"Because he believed our father sacrificed everything for your family and got nothing."
Adrien frowned.
"Samuel owned three businesses when he retired."
"Gabriel didn't care about money. He wanted power."
Marcus looked back.
"When we were kids, he used to say our father bowed while your father wore a crown."
"What happened to him?"
"Fire."
"Where?"
"Warehouse Seven. Fifteen years ago."
"Body?"
Marcus shook his head.
Adrien almost laughed.
Another man declared dead without a body.
His empire had apparently been constructed on ghosts.
"You never questioned it?"
"I saw the building burn."
"That's not an answer."
Marcus turned away.
"No. I didn't question it enough."
They reached Warehouse Twelve at 3:42 p.m.
Adrien had ordered all exterior security away.
Gabriel wanted the doll.
They would give him something that looked like the doll.
The original mechanism had been removed.
A duplicate casing now sat inside.
Elena carried it.
"No," Adrien said.
She looked at him.
"No what?"
"You're staying in the car."
"My daughter is inside."
"Exactly."
"Try stopping me."
Under different circumstances, Adrien might have smiled.
Instead he handed her a small transmitter.
"If I tell you to run, run."
"I won't."
"I know."
They entered.
The warehouse was enormous.
Rows of shipping containers stretched beneath steel rafters.
A single light illuminated the center.
Sophie sat in a chair.
Unhurt.
A man stood behind her.
Tall.
Silver hair.
Dark coat.
Marcus whispered.
"Gabriel."
The man smiled.
"Little brother."
Marcus's face twisted.
"You should be dead."
Gabriel laughed.
"You always lacked imagination."
Elena stepped forward.
"Sophie."
"Mommy!"
She tried to stand.
Gabriel placed one hand on her shoulder.
Adrien's voice hardened.
"Touch her again and you won't have hands."
Gabriel looked amused.
"So this is Adrien Moretti."
"We've met."
"Not officially."
"Release the girl."
"Give me the doll."
Elena held it up.
"First Sophie."
Gabriel smiled.
"That's not how this works."
Adrien studied the room.
Two gunmen visible.
Likely more hidden.
Cameras.
No obvious exits except loading doors.
He needed time.
"Why the children?"
Gabriel shrugged.
"Efficient."
"You tortured three babies."
"I made them uncomfortable."
Adrien stepped forward.
Luca quietly moved left.
"Call it whatever helps you sleep."
Gabriel smiled.
"I sleep very well."
Marcus shouted.
"You've been doing this for years?"
Gabriel looked at his brother.
"I've been building what Father should have built."
"By hiding behind Adrien's name?"
"By using his infrastructure."
Gabriel's eyes returned to Adrien.
"For years, your trucks have carried my weapons. Your companies washed my money. Your enemies blamed you for crimes you never ordered."
Adrien understood.
The unexplained attacks.
Police pressure.
Deals collapsing.
Someone had built a shadow empire beneath his.
"Ryan discovered you."
Gabriel's smile disappeared.
"Ryan Mercer was annoyingly observant."
Elena's fists clenched.
"Where is he?"
Gabriel looked at her.
"Alive."
Her knees almost gave way.
Sophie began crying.
"My daddy?"
Gabriel looked down at her.
"Yes, sweetheart."
Elena shouted, "Don't speak to her."
Gabriel laughed.
"Ryan has been very stubborn."
Adrien understood why they needed the doll.
The data vault.
Ryan had locked evidence against Gabriel behind his acoustic system.
"Where is Ryan?"
"Close."
Gabriel pointed toward a shipping container.
Two men opened it.
Inside sat a thin, bearded man chained to a chair.
Elena stopped breathing.
"Ryan."
His head lifted.
Four years changed a person.
But Elena recognized him instantly.
Ryan stared at her.
Then at Sophie.
His face shattered.
"Elena."
She ran.
Adrien grabbed her.
"Wait."
Gabriel raised a gun.
"Such a touching reunion."
Sophie cried harder.
Ryan stared at his daughter as though the world had cracked open.
"Is that—"
"Yes," Elena sobbed.
Ryan closed his eyes.
"My baby."
Gabriel interrupted.
"The doll."
Adrien nodded to Elena.
She placed it on the floor and kicked it forward.
Gabriel picked it up.
He opened the back.
His smile vanished.
"Fake."
Adrien had expected that.
Gabriel raised his weapon toward Sophie.
Adrien's hand moved.
"Don't."
"Where is the mechanism?"
"Safe."
"You're bluffing."
"No."
Gabriel pressed the gun near Sophie's head.
Elena screamed.
Adrien had faced guns hundreds of times.
Never like this.
His voice remained calm.
"The mechanism activates with a frequency sequence."
Gabriel narrowed his eyes.
"You know."
"Ryan's letter explained enough."
Ryan stared at Adrien.
Gabriel smiled.
"Then you understand why I need Sophie."
Elena looked confused.
Ryan shouted.
"No!"
Gabriel laughed.
"Ryan designed the vault so adults couldn't easily reproduce the audible confirmation pattern. But little Sophie inherited her father's hearing."
Adrien looked at Ryan.
"You built a vault that requires a child?"
Ryan shook his head.
"I didn't know Elena was pregnant when I designed the first version. I changed it later."
"What does Sophie have to do with it?"
"Nothing."
Gabriel's smile widened.
"That's not entirely true."
Ryan stared.
Gabriel continued.
"The frequency code is stored inside the doll. Ryan destroyed the digital copy. Sophie can tell us which tones are correct."
Elena pulled Sophie closer with her eyes.
"Never."
Gabriel shrugged.
"Children cooperate eventually."
Adrien's expression changed.
Something primal.
Gabriel noticed.
"Ah."
He smiled.
"There he is."
"Who?"
"The monster everyone talks about."
Adrien took another step.
"You brought a four-year-old child into this."
"I needed leverage."
"You already had Ryan."
"He stopped caring whether he lived."
Adrien looked at the chained man.
He understood that too.
Gabriel continued.
"But people become wonderfully cooperative when someone they love is threatened."
Adrien thought about his triplets.
The screaming nursery.
The device in the wall.
This entire plan had not been intended merely to summon him from Warehouse Twelve.
Gabriel had wanted Adrien distracted while his men searched the warehouse.
Sophie's accidental discovery had ruined the timing.
A four-year-old had disrupted a conspiracy that had survived for years.
Gabriel looked at Elena.
"Bring the real doll before midnight."
"And Sophie?"
"Stays with me."
"No."
Gabriel raised his gun.
Then a tiny voice interrupted.
"The sound is here."
Everyone looked at Sophie.
She had stopped crying.
Gabriel frowned.
"What?"
Sophie looked toward the floor.
"The bad sound."
Adrien noticed Ryan's expression change.
Hope.
"Which direction?" Ryan asked.
Sophie pointed.
"Under us."
Ryan smiled for the first time.
Gabriel realized too late.
The data vault was below the warehouse.
And Sophie had just found its active frequency emitter.
Ryan suddenly threw himself sideways.
His chair struck Gabriel's knees.
Gunfire exploded.
Adrien moved.
Luca shot the first gunman.
Marcus tackled the second.
Elena ran toward Sophie.
Adrien fired at a man appearing on the catwalk.
Gabriel grabbed Sophie.
"No!"
Elena lunged.
Gabriel dragged the child backward.
Then Sophie did something nobody expected.
She bit him.
Hard.
Gabriel yelled and released her.
Sophie ran.
Adrien caught her with one arm and pulled her against his chest.
Elena reached them.
"Go!"
Adrien handed Sophie to her.
Luca covered the exit.
Marcus freed Ryan.
Gabriel disappeared between containers.
Adrien wanted to chase him.
Every instinct demanded it.
But Sophie was shaking against Elena's chest.
Ryan could barely stand.
Family first.
Revenge later.
They escaped.
Outside, Sophie reached toward Ryan.
He froze.
Four years of hiding.
Four years of imprisonment.
Four years of believing distance kept his daughter safe.
Sophie touched his beard.
"Are you my daddy?"
Ryan began crying.
"Yeah."
She looked at him seriously.
"You're very scratchy."
Elena laughed through her tears.
So did Ryan.
Even Adrien smiled.
For one fragile moment, beneath the gray warehouse sky, they had won something.
Then Luca's phone rang.
His expression darkened.
"Boss."
Adrien looked at him.
"What?"
"The estate."
Adrien's heart stopped.
Luca continued.
"Gabriel's people breached the gate fifteen minutes ago."
Adrien looked at the photograph on his phone.
His sleeping triplets.
Gabriel had never intended to win at Warehouse Twelve.
It had been another distraction.
Adrien turned toward the SUV.
"Drive."
