My Mother Had Another Name
Marian · For my daughters Fictional narrator · 2 min read
The name on the theater program was not my mother’s. The woman in the photograph was unmistakably her.
I found it while clearing her attic: a stage name, a date in 1958, and a review folded into a silk scarf. My mother had spent my childhood saying she could not carry a tune. Here she was, advertised as the evening’s singer.

She was still alive then, living in a small apartment with a kettle that whistled too loudly. I carried the box to her and expected a dramatic confession. Instead she put on her glasses and said, “They always spelled that name wrong.”
She had sung for two summers before her father became ill. Going home was necessary. Never trying again was more complicated. She had been afraid she was not good enough, and later it was easier to say there had been no choice. I had inherited the tidy version.
We spent that afternoon labeling photographs. She told me about bad auditions, a borrowed blue dress, and a pianist she had loved for exactly eleven days. Then she sang one verse at the kitchen table. Her voice shook. Mine did too when I asked for another.
I want my daughters to have these stories alongside the recipes and birthdays. Their grandmother was devoted, impatient, funny, frightened, and once brave enough to sing to strangers. I wish I had asked sooner. I am glad I did not wait until the box was all that could answer.

Keep your project private, or discuss publishing your written story, your film, or both.
2
Agree before publication
Review a separate agreement and decide whether to accept it. Nothing is published without your permission.
